IVF Success rates

IVF success rates

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most efficient and commonly applied type of ART. It is undoubtedly the most significant advance in the field of reproductive medicine. The couples that can’t have children of their own due to infertility very often opt for this type of ART. Since this procedure is one of the top reproductive services in fertility clinics, the parents-to-be very often enquire about the success rate for IVF, because the available information differs a lot.

What is the success rate of ivf and what does it really mean?

IVF success rate refers to the number of IVF cycles that result in a clinical pregnancy and live births. This definition is pretty simple and clear, but still, it creates a lot of confusion, because some clinics provide the number of live births as their “success rate”, some provide the number of successful embryo implantations, some combine these two numbers. For this reason, it may not be that clear-cut understandable.

What determines the success rate of IVF?

Many couples that struggle with infertility issues and opt for ART want to hear the answer to a question of how successful is IVF for solving their problem. It is important to ask this question while searching for medical help.

So, what factors may impact the IVF chances of success?

  • The quality of assistance the clinic can provide. Not only does the price differs in reproductive clinics, but the success rates for IVF as well. This difference in statistics of IVF success rate is caused by the fact that the clinics apply different technologies and the qualification of the staff varies as well. Over the last decade, the IVF success rates increased dramatically. It may be explained by the scientific advances in this field such as improved ovulation induction medications, refined laboratory techniques, less traumatic embryo transfer catheters, brand new methods of egg freezing and fertilization, etc. The scientific development caused the increase in competition among fertility clinics – they strive to provide the best possible quality of care by using the most advanced technologies.
  • Your age. If we look at the IVF success rates by age distribution, we will see that age does play a crucial role in the success of this procedure, as well in the fertility in general. Not only do the chances of getting pregnant naturally decrease with age, but the chances of having a successful IVF cycle go down as well.  Women who get pregnant after 35-40 have a higher risk of stillbirth, caesarian section and other issues. Furthermore, the age of a man is tremendously important as well due to a decrease in fertilization features of the sperm. The statistics show that the older age of a male partner is associated with higher rates of chromosomal abnormalities in children.
  • Your lifestyle and medical conditions. Unhealthy lifestyle is linked to the lower chances of getting pregnant

What are the average IVF success rates?

Given the information above, this is a rather tricky question. The average success rate of IVF resulting in clinical pregnancy for women under 30 y.o. is around 41-42% (fresh and frozen embryo transfer), the success rate of live birth for this age group is around 34-35%. For women aged 30-40, these success rates are a bit lower: 32-37% for IVF cycles resulting in clinical pregnancy and 25-31% for live births. For women after 40 those numbers are even less satisfying – 14% and 9% correspondingly.

Parens Fertility is one of the leaders in the field of reproductive medicine. In 2019, Parens Group performed more than 3500 IVF cycles with 56% success rate, which is above average in this field. Last year, our highly-qualified doctors have helped 1500 couples to become parents and to finally experience the joy of nurturing a baby.
